ROSCOE ARBUCKLE: The Life, the Scandal, and the Films

The one thing everybody knows about Roscoe Arbuckle--he hated it when people called him "Fatty"--is the scandal that destroyed his career and contributed to his premature death.  But not one word of it was true!  What is forgotten is that Arbuckle was one of the most brilliant auteurs of silent comedy, and the mentor and discoverer of younger artists including Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, and Bob Hope.  Steve Massa, one of the world's top authorities on silent film comedy, will tell the TRUE story of the life, the scandal, and the art of Fatty (sorry, Roscoe!) Arbuckle, and will show some of Arbuckle's very best work in gorgeous newly restored prints.

Steve Massa is the author of more than half a dozen books including Lame Brains and Lunatics: The Good, The Bad, and The Forgotten of Silent Comedy; Slapstick Divas: The Women of Silent Comedy; and Rediscovering Roscoe: The Films of "Fatty" Arbuckle. He has talked about silent film comedy at the Museum of Modern Art, the Library for the Performing Arts, and silent film festivals around the world, and has contributed commentary to countless DVDs of silent film.

Steve Massa's talk and film screening will be followed by a WINE AND CHEESE RECEPTION.
