RAY BY RAY: Nicca Ray talks about her father NICHOLAS RAY

Time & Location

Jul 21, 2025, 6:30 PM

New York, 30 Rockefeller Plaza 26th floor, New York, NY 10112, USA

About the event

Nicholas Ray made James Dean a star with Rebel Without a Cause.  He was admired by, and an influence on, Francois Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard ("Le cinema, c'est Nicholas Ray"), Wim Wenders, Jim Jarmusch, and many others.  His other films include They Live by Night, In a Lonely Place, and Johnny Guitar.  However he was in constant conflict with the Hollywood studio system in which he worked, and his personal life was an out of control mess of drugs, sex, and alcohol.  Now, his daughter Nicca Ray has written a penetrating book, Ray by Ray, and is eager to talk about her father as an artist and a person.  Foster Hirsch, Professor of Film at Brooklyn College and the author of 16 books on film and theater, will be the interviewer.

Nicca Ray is herself a distinguished poet with three published poetry collections.

Nicca Ray's book about her father will be available for purchase, and a booksigning will follow the event.

The evening will begin at 6:30 with a WINE AND CHEESE RECEPTION, with the interview starting at 7 pm.
