About the event
You're working on a project you're really excited about. And then the people you most respect are baffled, puzzled, at best tolerant. What now? Victoria Wilson and Jane Friedman will talk about the most difficult decisions that defined their careers.
Victoria Wilson and Jane Friedman are among the most admired and influential people in American publishing.
Jane Friedman became the first female global CEO of a major publisher when Rupert Murdoch named her President & CEO of HarperCollins Worldwide in 1997, and she remained in that role until 2008. In 2009, Friedman co-founded Open Road Integrated Media with Jeffrey Sharp. As CEO, she transformed digital media, creating ebooks from authors including William Styron, Alice Walker, and James Jones--and was named one of Fortune Magazine's most powerful women entrepreneurs. Before that, she was at Random House, where she was Executive Vice President. She has worked with John le Carré, Julia Child, Michael Crichton, John Updike, Joseph Heller, Toni Morrison, and Dennis Lehane.
As Vice President and Executive Editor at Alfred A. Knopf, Victoria Wilson worked with Anne Rice, Lorrie Moore, Christopher Plummer, Billy Dee Williams, George Stevens, Suzanne Simard, Wendy Wasserstein, Arthur Laurents, Lauren Bacall, Eve Babitz, Rose Styron, Amy Klobuchar, Laurie Colwin, Peter Beard, Mary Ellen Mark, Jill Ciment, Sapphire, Jane Alexander, Jacques d'Amboise, Erin Brockovitch, and many many more. Since leaving Knopf, she has continued to work as a consulting editor and as a writer. Her A Life of Barbara Stanwyck: Steel-True 1907-1940 was published to great acclaim (“Monumental.” -- Peter Bogdanovich; “Huge and wonderful and rich. ” -- Anne Rice; “860 glittering pages” -- Janet Maslin, The NYT ), and she is currently at work on the concluding volume.
The evening will begin at 6:30 with a WINE AND CHEESE RECEPTION, with the conversation starting at 7 pm.
